Double Digit Addition Fun with Freebies!

Learning double digit addition with regrouping is tough for many first graders. I try to teach it in varied methods to hopefully reach all of my students. After doing the usual manipulatives and demonstrations, I made this fun anchor chart to help us remember the steps.

Then we made our own plus sign graphic organizers to help us remember (Thank you Pinterest!). We used the graphic organizers for great informative writing! They did a fantabulous job!

I also made a fun practice sheet "Double Digit Dominoes" that works great in my STEM center. The kids pick the dominoes, add them up. Then for fun they line them up and knock them over when they finish the sheet. (This even helps us with "How Things Move")

I Speak for the Books!

This year as a part of our Seuss celebration we challenged our first graders to read and take reading counts test. I set a short term class goal for the kids and it worked better than I imagined!

We set a class goal of 120 Reading Counts points in one week. For every book they read, the students got to put a "truffulla tree" in our hallway forest. The color of the tree varied based on the point value of the book. They put their name and title of the book on the trunk. Students then added the points to the classes count with tally marks. The class tally marks was great math practice. Each day we subtracted the points earned from our class goal to see how many points we had left to earn. We even divided to see how many points each child needed to earn.

The absolute best part was watching the students cheer on their classmates as they worked together to reach the goal. When the kids reached their goal the cheers I heard and smiles on their faces was amazing. I was so proud of them we had a pizza party to celebrate!!!

I am busy building my blog and want it to be be as fantastic as many of the ones I lurk on. I have been looking but does anyone know if there is a "How To" on setting up a Teacher Blog, TpT Store and uploading files?

Still Learning...

OK I have changed my e-mail to match my blog. Now to see how to upload and link my creations. I also can't wait to post some of the great things I'm doing. Learning new things are a challenge, now I know how my kids feel sometimes.

And the Journey Begins...

Today I am excited to start my blog.  I hope to share many ideas and meet some great people.  I look forward to sharing many fun things from my class.
