Five for Friday and a Freebie!

It is finally Friday! I'm doing my Friday Freeze Dance!!!!  Speaking of the favorite freeze dance, have you tried the extended freeze dance.  I press the pause button to extend the freeze time.  (This is purely for my enjoyment to watch, give it a try!)

1. My eggs are incubating, we are on day 4 of 28ish.  I can not wait for this weekend when I should be able to candle them to see how they are doing.  I have to turn them 3 times a day, so it is a good thing I live close to school.  Next week, I will have pics of what is going on inside!
 2.  We have had so much fun in class guessing what will hatch from the eggs.  You can see from the list below, we started with a long list of possibilities!  We have learned about the eggs of all these animals by reading and researching.  Today we have narrowed down our possibilities to a chicken, duck or a turkey.  (They are really ducks.)
 3.  What time is it?  This week we were learning about measurement.  Unfortunately, our current math series doesn't include time.  However, our standardized test and Common Core does.  Here is a quick assessment I am using, grab it free here.  It is a Friday Freebie!
4.  We are celebrating poetry month.  I love Ook the Book!  I read it to the class, then we tried out hand at writing a poem as a class.  Then, the kids tried their own hand at it!  They amazed me with their poetry, they love it.  Now in their free time, they are writing poetry too!

5. Ready for a crazy week coming up!  Next week is FCAT week.  (If you are a Florida teacher or parent, that just sent a shiver up your spine!)  Even though my firsties don't take it, our daily schedule is changed for the week.  My kiddos don't do well when their routines are changed.  In addition, both of my girls take the test this year!  We also don't do outside recess during this time so that the upper grades have the quietest possible testing environment  I need indoor recess idea!!!  Please share in the comments below!

  1. Stinky about those upcoming testing days...we know about the yucky schedule changes all too well. Our testing days aren't until May. As for indoor recess, we're lucky our kiddos love to just have some "free time," where they can play with math manipulatives, draw with markers, read, or use whiteboards. We have gotten out our scrapbox with left over construction paper and they have LOVED creating with it! Good luck next week!

  2. I wish I could remember which blogger had this idea. Play 7up but instead of guessing the name of the person who picked you they have to read the sight word or spelling word that the child is holding up. You will need to change out the words to keep it interesting but I thought it sounded like a lot of fun for firsties!

  3. Good luck with the eggs! Our kindergarten teacher broke out some old projectors and used the strong lights to see in the eggs with the kids. It worked out well with no flashlights!

    1. I actually have an overhead I do this with too. You should have seen the media specialist when I asked to check out an overhead (I am pretty "techie" so she wanted to know what the heck I needed it for!)

  4. I love the guesses they made on the chart! That is too cute! Aw, I can't wait to see the ducks. We had chicks in our room when I interned and it was the best! I found your blog through Five for Friday and I am your newest follower! :)

    1. I loved their crazy guesses too. The eggs are different sizes, so they think we may have a multitude of things hatching!

  5. I love the eggs! I was going to guess chicken. Our ISTEP (grades 3-5) is coming up soon. Boo. Our schedule switches a bit but mostly our computer lab schedule. Luckily we still get recess. I couldn't not have recess outside when the weather is so nice. (Especially if you're in FL!)

For a behavior management thing we do marbles. For our last marble party we brought in gadgets. They were engaged and quiet. Sometimes I like to play music and let them dance (though depending on your location in the building this could be a distraction.) Also, depending on volume of the kiddos Adventure to Fitness might work. One of our kindergarten teachers uses it sometimes for movement breaks. http://www.adventuretofitness.com

Good luck. I found you on the linky. I'm your newest follower.

  6. Thanks for the great little time assessment page.

I like some of the following for indoor recess:

    1) Hide numbers and letters around the room... they roam the room and record (no talking or giving hints).
    2) I draw pictures on the board/overhead- they write guesses- good writing (invented spelling) practice.
    3) Simon Says
    4) Art projects galore!
    5) Charades - this is a hoot with little ones!

  7. If you have a projector or SmartBoard, definitely search Pinterest for some Just Dance Kids videos! They're a great way to get kids up and moving, but they also think it's really fun.

  8. We have a weird schedule because of fcat. It will make for long afternoons! My students love Youtube Just Dance Kids videos. There are also some great yoga ones for kids. It helps to calm them down. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cNjAj_o0SI
