"Sun"day was great! I enjoyed a few hours at the beach with my girls. I figured the salt water and air would be just what the doctor ordered to clear out the flu! (I am sure the Tamaflu helped too!)
I am getting ready to teach all about Martin Luther King Jr. next week. I put together a packet with all of the things I will be using next week. It includes a reading passage, reading comprehension questions, writing activities, center activities, coloring sheets and one of my favorite lessons ever!!! You can get the entire pack here from Teachers Pay Teachers or Teachers Notebook.
I want to share one of my favorite lessons with everyone. It is a fun lesson and the kids really get it! I make a cake for Dr. Kings birthday using a cake mix. (This is also a great time to talk about measurements.) While gathering the ingredients I tell them I only had 2 white eggs at home and had to borrow an egg from Mrs. Jones and it is a brown egg. Many kids have not seen a brown egg before. I use this to springboard some great conversations! They are different, but are they the same? We predict what they will look like on the inside. (I just pray I don't get a double yolk egg by chance...) Where they came from? Can I mix them together? Will the cake still turn out?
We also make a venn diagram comparing the two eggs. Then we brainstorm a list of other things that look different but are very much alike. Click here to download a preview of my MLK unit that includes this lesson and venn diagram.
This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing!

Can you really make cupcakes in class? I would never be allowed to do that. I'm trying to think of ways to do this with the eggs (great idea!) without actually making the cupcakes. Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad everyone enjoyed it. Yes we can prepare cupcakes in class with students and have our cafeteria bake them. Not sure what else you could do with them? I thought about using a solar oven to bake the cupcakes, but wasn't that brave :o)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI just purchased this packet, love it! There is a MLK craft pictured in the packet but no pattern. Do you know where I can find the pattern?
Thanks,
Dee:)
Dee, I just kind of free handed it. I will try and make a patter to add. The prices are bigger than regular printer paper so I will have to scale it down. I will add it to my to do list and add it to the pack and you will be able to download it again free. Thanks for the suggestion!
